BMW showcased the stunning i8 Spyder Concept way back in 2012. The Bavarian carmaker confirmed that the debut of the open-top hybrid sportscar will be sometime next year. The roadster has been spotted on many occasions, however, the latest spy images from the streets of Munich reveal the car to be production ready.
Apart from the fabric roof, the webbed-style camouflaged body doesn’t show any radical changes from the standard i8. The roof-folding mechanism would be an interesting part of the Spyder. It seems likely that the power-folding roof will sit in between the seat and the electric powertrain at the rear. The characteristic aero profile of the i8 is retained with new signature LED headlights and tail lights. Although the i8 Spyder won’t be as outrageously gorgeous as the i8 Spyder Concept, it won’t be any less futuristic too. The space-age CRPF bodywork will ensure minimal increase in weight.
As far as powertrain is concerned, the i8 Spyder will scrounge the upgrade from the i8 Formula E Safety car. The battery pack, upgraded from 7.1kWh to 10kWh, will result in a higher driving range. With the combination of a tweaked three-cylinder 1.5-litre IC engine and the electric motor at the front axle, the power output is expected to surge to over 400 horsepower.
BMW is on a model offensive lately, refreshing its entire portfolio and introducing newer vehicles. While at it, the Bavarian carmaker has plans to expand its electric car line-up with the introduction of more EVs in the coming few years. Following in the wake of the new i8 Spyder will be an all-electric Mini and the X3 crossover.
Expect the i8 Spyder to be revealed at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.
