Last year BMW revealed the i8 – the brand’s most revolutionary production vehicle yet. With its low-slung futuristic design and a highly advanced powertrain, the i8 caught the attention of many in a short span of time. Looking to make an even bigger impression this time around, BMW is now said to be developing wireless charging for its electric and plug-in hybrid models.
According to Auto Express UK, the German carmaker is working on an inductive charging technology which will eventually be used in the i8 and the all-electric four-door i3. Even the upcoming plug-in hybrid version of the X5 SUV will benefit from this new technology. The latter will go on sale globally later this year.
The inductive charging technology is being co-developed alongside Daimler. Comprising of two components – a recharging coil in the floor and a floor-mounted base plate fitted with another coil, the system is operational when the car is parked in way that the two coils are positioned directly above one another. Following this, electrical energy is transmitted using the magnetic generated by both the coils.
