- The 8 Series Convertible will be the flagship drop-top for the Bavarian carmaker.
- This would be the second among three body types used for the new 8 Series.
- The official reveal will reportedly take place at the 2018 Los Angeles Motor Show.
BMW is prepping the drop-top version of the recently resurrected 8 Series. We first saw the 8 Coupe at the 24 Hours of Le Mans Endurance championship just a few months ago. And now the Convertible version will reportedly make its official debut at the 2018 Los Angeles Motor Show later next month. We spotted the 8 Convertible with bare minimum camouflage in a gorgeous Sunset Orange colour.
The new 8 Series Convertible will carry the same design as the 8 Coupe sans a hard top. The new soft-top convertible will be the flagship offering from the Bavarian carmaker which will rival against the likes of S-Class Convertible and Bentley GTC.
The test mule spotted here is the M850i guise as it has all the aggressive bits from BMW’s M-division. But this is not the full-blown M8 Convertible. That car will be arriving sometime later. The soft top seen here is black colour, but of course, there will be multiple choices for it on the production version. The rear bumper is slightly different from the one seen on the coupe. The massive alloy wheels look gorgeous on the drop-top and the large deck at the back also looks opulent, to say the least.
The 8 Convertible will be powered by the same 4.4-litre V8 making 523bhp and 750Nm as the 8 Coupe. All the power will be sent to an all-wheel-drive through an eight-speed automatic transmission. There’s also a more affordable variant with 5 Series’ turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six on the cards and we expect it to be revealed alongside the M850i.
Apart from the 8 Coupe and Convertible, BMW has also planned for a four-door variant called the Gran Coupe. All three variants will receive an M treatment as well.
