BMW has introduced a new body-style to the current line-up – a premium coupe-sedan called the 6 Series GT. Well, we have had this car before in India, but with the 5 Series GT badge. BMW has been realigning the nomenclature of their cars which is why the 5 Series GT has been reborn as the 6 Series GT.
With the success of the 3 Series in India, BMW saw the opportunity of bringing in the 6 Series as a fancier option for the 5 Series and at a price tag of Rs 58.90 lakhs, ex-showroom India, it certainly offers great value. The 6 Series GT stands taller and has more room for the rear passenger as well as more boot space.
The fascia is typical BMW with the twin-LED headlamps up front and the curvaceous bonnet blending into the shoulder-line. The profile is accentuated by the large alloy wheels, the sloping roof and the high-sitting boot-lid. The premium feel continues inside the car as well with the airy cabin and generous space which the 6 Series offers. Being a premium car, the 6 comes with three-zone climate control, electric sunroof, ambient lighting and electrically adjustable seats in the back as well.
For now, it is powered by a petrol inline four cylinder 2.0-litre engine only, but diesel options will be offered in due course of time. The power is sent to the rear wheels through an automatic gearbox and the 6 Series gets a comprehensive safety net of electronic driving aids.
The 6 Series GT primarily competes with the Audi A5, both being fastback coupes. Also, for this price, you have the option of buying regular executive sedans like the 5 Series, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the Audi A6, the Volvo S90, the Jaguar XF and the Lexus ES.
But if you want to step away from these regular sedans, you can choose from the likes of a Mercedes-Benz GLC, the Audi Q5, the upcoming BMW X3, the Land Rover Discovery Sport, the Range Rover Evoque or the Lexus NX.
For a little more moolah, you can lay your hands on the sporty Audi TT or the Ford Mustang or the Mercedes C300 Cabriolet. Or else, there's the Audi A3 Cabriolet, which can give you some open-air fun while saving a few lakhs too.
