Love it or hate it, BMW hasn’t given up on its controversial Gran Turismo design theme just yet as there will be a second-generation model of the original 5 Series GT introduced back in 2009. The second-gen model, in fact, has been spotted on test and here are the first images of one of the heavily camouflaged prototypes.
The second-gen 5 Series GT will arrive in late 2016, along with the 5 Series sedan and Touring (station wagon) models.
The new 5 Series GT uses all of BMW’s latest design cues such as the headlights that flow into the kidney grille and the prominent character line across the sides. The car will retain the same roof line as the existing model albeit with a more digestible look for the rear end.
The forthcoming 5 Series range will make use of BMW’s new platform that mixes high-strength steel, aluminium and carbon fibre to help shed around 80kg off the existing range. As for the engines, there will be a wide variety including four, six and even three cylinder engine options.
The new 5 Series GT will go on sale sometime late next year and will join the smaller 3 Series GT in BMW’s line-up.
