Just two days ago, we told you that BMW is likely to launch the 3 Series GT for the Indian market early next year via the CBU route and now a fully camouflaged car has been spotted testing outside Pune. The car was unveiled at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show and is based on the same concept as the 5 Series GT; same underpinnings but with a larger body to increase practicality and space.
The 3 Series GT is 200mm longer (extended wheelbase of 110mm) over the standard car thanks Skoda Octavia style notchback boot lid which is electronically controlled. When the rear seats are folded up the boot capacity can be extended to massive 1600-litres. From the pictures it’s pretty much visible that the 3 Series GT is significantly larger and should make a tantalising prospect when compared to its rivals in its segment.
The 3 Series GT gets exactly the same interiors as the standard car but looks much bigger thanks to the extended wheelbase. It is pretty much the same story on the outside with regard to exterior design, with the only major change being the design of the rear end.
It is expected to be launched in two variants; the 320d and the 330d. The former will be powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder mill while the latter gets a 3.0-litre straight-six engine. Both will make use of the ZF eight-speed automatic to send power to the rear wheels.
Since the German automaker's factory is inn Chennai and head office near Delhi, it is likley that this car may have been paying a visit to the ARAI facility near Pune. BMW is likely to price the 3 Series GT Rs 20 lakh over the standard car due to its being a CBU. It is likely to be launched at the 2014 Auto Expo.
