BMW has launched the 3 Series GT at the Auto Expo for Rs 42.75 lakh (all India ex-showroom). The 3 Series GT will be assembled at the German automaker’s Chennai plant and deliveries will begin in March. It follows the same principle as the 5 Series GT which was brought to India in 2012.
The car broke cover last year at the Geneva Motor Show and is a bigger and a rather practical version of the 3 Series sedan. The overall hike in dimensions stand at an additional 200mm in length with a height increase of 81mm and a 110mm longer wheelbase than the standard sedan. It was previously spotted testing outside Chennai and later Phillipp Von Sahr confirmed to CarWale that the car would be launched for the Indian market this year.
As compared to the sedan, the GT has larger headlights, a larger grille and a softly contoured hood. The biggest change in the rear is the sloping fastback which houses the hatch and an electrically raised rear spoiler - a first for BMW. The interior features the same layout as seen in the 3 Series sedan, with the exception of the additional legroom.
The car comes in only the 320d variant and is powered by the 2.0-litre straight-six engine that produces 184bhp and 380Nm of torque. The automatic gearbox comes courtesy ZF and has overall eight forward ratios. The power is sent to the rear wheels. The 3 Series GT is in a niche category when it comes to compeititon due to its design.
