BMW has announced the launch of the third model in the brand‘s 2 Series line-up in the form of a convertible model. Called the 2 Series Convertible, BMW says this new model is a direct replacement for the old 1 Series Convertible and comes with prices ranging between £29,180 (Rs 28.06 lakh) and £37,710 (Rs 36.29 lakh).
Given that the old 1 Series Convertible was the most successful car in its class with sales of more than 1.3 lakh units, this new model has a tough act to follow.
The 2 Series Convertible is longer (by 72mm) and wider (by 26mm) than the model it replaces, and has a wheelbase which has been elongated by 30mm. These improvements have been made to enhance passenger space and the overall look of the car. The electrically operated folding soft top can be raised or lowered in 20 seconds at the touch of a button, and can be carried out at speeds of just over 48kmph. The car also gets an optional wind deflector which provides greater protection against turbulence when driving with the top-down.
The 2 Series Convertible will be available with a choice of four engines, including a new 2-litre diesel for the 220d and, for the first time in a BMW convertible, an M Performance variant, the M235i.
The 2 Series Convertible is now on sale in the UK. As for the India launch, the 2 Series would be introduced in coupe form, if BMW India ever decides to consider the model at all.
