If a report by Car Magazine UK is to be believed, BMW is readying a plug-in hybrid model for its 2 Series Active Tourer. The luxury MPV amassed quite a buzz when it was launched earlier this year as it is BMW’s very first front-wheel drive vehicle.
Come 2015 and the Active Tourer will gain a plug-in hybrid model. When launched, the vehicle will join BMW’s existing range of plug-in hybrids. According to the report, the hybrid technology will be shared with the next-generation X1.
The report also states that the 2 Series Active Tourer hybrid will be a four-wheel drive model with the conventional petrol engine powering the front wheels and a 102bhp electric motor powering the rear wheels. BMW first showed the Active Tourer as a plug-in hybrid concept car at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. It had a 1.5-litre petrol engine mated to an electric motor to provide an all-electric driving range of nearly 30km. The production-spec model, then, could feature a similar configuration when it goes on sale sometime next year.
