BMW currently offers the xDrive all-wheel drive system on a number of SUVs in its range. The brand is now offering the system in the 2 Series Active Tourer, in a bid to enhance the appeal of its premium MPV.
When the 2 Series Active Tourer was introduced in the market,it marked a new era for BMW as it was the first ever front-wheel drive model from them. With the addition of the all-wheel drive, the 2 Series Active Tourer will now be able to compete better with its arch rival namely the Mercedes-Benz B-Class.
Under normal driving conditions, power is sent purely to the front wheels. The upshot of this is improved fuel economy and lesser emissions compared to a full time all-wheel drive vehicle. Like the 4MATIC system on the Mercedes B-Class, the multi-plate clutch on the BMW can send up to 100 per cent of power to the axle with the most grip in case wheel spin is detected.
In Europe, the xDrive system will be available on the 225i petrol and 220d diesel 2-Series Active Tourer models.
