BMW 1 Series sedan test mule was spotted in what seems like an early stage of testing. The 1 Series sedan, expected to ride on the UKL platform, is BMW’s answer to the Mercedes CLA and the Audi A3 sedan.
The test mule sported a long bonnet, a sloping roofline, shark-fin antenna and dual exhausts in typical BMW fashion. But, we expect it to look much different from the 3 Series, the entry-level sedan in the company’s current range of products.
The details are scarce, but it is rumoured that the 1 Series sedan will get a 1.6-litre turbocharged, four-cylinder petrol engine. The US model might be only available with the petrol engines. For the other markets, the sedan is expected to sport a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. Both engines might be mated to an eight-speed ZF transmission.
It is expected to be launched in the market in 2016 and we expect the car to make its Indian debut in the same year. It is evident that BMW has lost the advantage of being the first in India as the CLA and A3 take the lead. However, there is still time and maybe they can learn from the mistakes of their allies.
