The Bajaj RE 60 has been spotted testing in Pune. It was first unveiled at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo and has been billed as a safer alternative to the auto rickshaws (ironically also made famous by Bajaj themselves). The Pune based bike major has been caught testing this undisguised vehicle three times in the last few months, leading us to believe that it will be launched within the next few months.
The RE60 is powered by a 200cc DTS-I engine. This is the same engine that powered the original Pulsar 200 motorcycle. It is capable of producing 20bhp and will pushing the tiny car to a top speed of 75kmpl all while supposedly having a fuel efficiency of 35kmpl.
The RE60 spotted is pretty similar to what was shown at the Auto Expo except for changes to the rear-end which includes the glass window being replaced by a fabric cover and the metal hatch door being replaced by a plastic one. This is a step most likely taken to keep costs down and on a lighter note, maybe to allow cargo to dangle out of the back like most autos do.
The car has features like the central speedometer cluster, dashboard mounted shifter, folding front windows and 44-litre boot space. The model that was snapped also had alloy wheels making it most likely the private variant.
The RE60 has been created with the sole purpose of being a small, easy to park and cheap to maintain city run-about. Like we said before, rather than target the Tata Nano, it has been aimed at replacing the auto rickshaw. The Renault-Nissan alliance had expressed interest in selling a re-badged version of the car but there is no word on the development till now.
