The official Audi Sport Facebook page has posted a picture of the 2014 R18 e-tron. The car will be the manufacturer’s entry for the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship season and the Le Mans 24 Hours. Last week, Audi had posted a teaser in the form of a photo of Tom Kristensen next to a covered LMP1 car. Also a glimpse of the car was shown at the end of the 2013 FIA WEC season highlights video from Audi, which was released on YouTube.
The car will carry forward the previous year’s name of “Audi R18 e-tron Quattro”. Though it has retained all the shapes and lines of the current car, Audi claims that the product has been developed as a fundamentally new Le Mans prototype corresponding to the WEC Technical Regulations for 2014. The car will feature a flywheel-based, electric-drive system paired with a powerful TDI engine with advanced fuel-saving technology. The testing of the car has been initiated at Sebring. Further details pertaining to the car are to be published before the end of December.
Including the 2013 title, Audi has won Le Mans 24 Hours 12 times so far, with their first victory coming in 2000. Only Porsche betters this record, having won the title 16 times so far. Last year, Audi also became the first team to win the Le Mans using hybrid technology. The 2014 edition promises to be exciting with a three-way battle between the Audi and yet-to-be revealed race cars from Toyota and Porsche.
