Audi India has started local assembly of its luxury SUV, the Q7 at its facility in Aurangabad. It joins the A4, A6 and the Q5 as the fourth model to be assembled in the country. The German automaker has also planned to assemble the Q3 compact crossover at the same facility from mid-2013.
Commenting on the development, Frank Dreves, board member for production, said "Local production of the Audi Q7 is part of our long-term growth strategy in India, one of the most promising auto markets in the world.” Audi is looking to assemble around 1000 Q7s at its newly constructed hall in the group plant Skoda Auto India Private Limited (SAIPL). All these models will be sold locally.
We do not know which variants of the Q7, apart from the 3.0-litre diesel will be assembled locally, and have asked Audi in this regard. We will provide the details as soon as we get them.
Audi has already surpassed its total sales from 2011 in the first 10 months of this year (Total sales 2011-5511 units. January 2012 to October 2012 sales-7237 units) and obviously views India as a very important market to take such a step. This also means that the cost of the luxury SUV will come down significantly allowing Audi to give it a competitive price.
Edit: Audi has confirmed that for now, the 3.0-litre diesel Q7 will be assembled in India. They will assemble the other variants from next year onwards.
