Given the ever rising competition in the entry-level luxury sedan segment, Audi has constantly updated the current-generation A4 with new technology and better quality. However, sales of the model are now falling significantly behind the latest-generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the BMW 3-Series.
Audi, then, is hard at work readying the next-generation version of the A4. According to the reports, this new model will be among Audi’s most technically advanced cars yet. It will also be quite a crucial offering for Audi as the launch will mark the debut of the German automaker’s new MLB-Evo architecture.
In development for five years, the MLB-Evo architecture is a result of a huge investment by Audi. Instead of the traditional welded steel monocoque, MLB-Evo makes use of a blend of aluminium and steel and some lightweight composite materials that are joined by rivets, screws and high-tech adhesives. Such is the advancement in this new technology that Audi has had to retool the factories that will manufacturer all the models starting from this new generation A4.
As Audi enthusiasts would expect, the upcoming A4 will continue to feature the existing longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive layout. However, reports have claimed that the new model will be the least nose-heavy Audi yet. The automaker’s famed quattro four-wheel drive mechanism will be available as an option, although an electrically driven rear axle could also be on offer.
Not much is known about the launch date or the public unveiling. Expect Audi to put this new generation A4 on sale sometime next year.
