The convertible version of the new Audi R8 has debuted at the New York Auto Show. Weighing substantially more than the hardtop model, the convertible with the same drivetrain still has an impressive 0 to 100kmph time of 3.6 seconds.
The R8 Sypder uses the 5.2-litre V10 engine, spitting 532bhp and 540Nm through the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to the Quattro AWD system. Along with the quick acceleration, which is just tenth of a second slower than the coupe, this one also has top speed of 317kmph. With the additional strengthening of the chassis to make up for the missing roof and the mechanicals to operate the soft top, it weighs 158 kilograms more.
The roof itself can be moved in less than 20 seconds and can be operated up to the speed of 50kmph. While the debut of the convertible version hasn’t been a surprise, the omission of the more powerful V10 Plus has definitely caught everyone’s attention. In the hardtop, the V10 Plus spec engine delivers 610bhp and is 0.3 seconds quicker than the standard car.
The booking for the new car are open in the global markets with deliveries starting later this year. As for India launch, we will first get the new coupe that was displayed at the Auto Expo and then may be the Sypder towards the end of the year.
