Audi will launch a new crossover in 2017 called the Q8. This vehicle will be the German automaker's flagship model in the segment and is expected to be sportier than the current lineup and will take on a range of similar models from manufacturers like BMW and Range Rover.
The Q8 will be based on parent company Volkswagen’s MLB architecture which is likely to underpin the next generation Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg. Reports suggest that while the Q3, Q5 and the Q7 are expected to look like SUVs, the even-numbered Q models will be sleeker, sportier and maybe even coupe-like (but with the big wheels obviously). Audi also plans to go on a weight loss spree with the Q8 and is aiming to make it 300 kilos lighter than the current generation Q7.
Under the hood, the Q8 is likely to get a variety of V6 and V8 engines as well as a hybrid mill. This being Audi, we can also expect a 550bhp RS version. It is likely that by the time this SUV goes into production the crossover market will hold a huge share of global vehicle sales, putting Audi in a good position to challenge its rivals.
