Audi has revealed its plans to launch a one-make racing series based on the new TT sportscar. The brand will be seen running the Audi Sport TT Cup which will be a part of the DTM touring car racing in the 2015 season. Having introduced the R8 LMS Cup in Asia, the TT one-make cup in Germany will be Audi’s second one-make racing series.
The race-spec TT will have 310bhp of power from its 2-litre TFSI engine and will weigh about 1,125 kilograms. With the help of what Audi calls ‘push-to-pass function’ the power output can be briefly boosted by another 30bhp.
Audi has revealed that two races of the TT Sport Cup have been planned at each of the six 2015 DTM venues in Germany and neighbouring countries. Six cockpits will be reserved for changing guest drivers, while interested drivers can apply worldwide for the other 18 places on the grid online. The winner of the series can look forward to receiving support in Audi’s successful GT3 sports car program.
The TT Sport Cup seems like an ideal proving ground for aspiring racers. Perhaps Audi India should come up with a similar initiative which will not only help young, talented racers gain some exposure, but also get accustomed with some of the high-tech racing machineries out there.
