German automaker Audi has recalled around 8.5 lakh units of the A4 sedan globally. The recall has been implemented for issues relating to defective airbags. While nearly half of the 8.5 lakh cars were sold in China and Germany, close to 7,000 units sold in the Indian market, are part of the recall.
Audi India has recalled 6,758 units, to be precise. Owners of cars manufactured between November 2011 and October 2014 have been notified to upgrade software in the airbag control unit. "This activity is specific to Audi A4 cars manufactured between November 2011and October 2014. There are 6,758 Audi A4 identified for this software update campaign," Audi India said in a statement. The recall process requires just a software update and no components need to be replaced, the brand adds.
Over seven lakh vehicles have been recalled by a number of automakers since the auto industry body SIAM started a voluntary vehicle recall for safety-related issues in India in July 2012. These automakers include bigwigs like Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra, Toyota, Ford, Honda and General Motors. In the recent past, Honda and Nissan issued a preventive recall to replace defective airbag inflators.
