The A3 sedan may be the smallest Audi known to us Indians but as a matter of fact, there’s the A1 hatchback which is even smaller. On sale since 2010, the A1 has done well in several European as well as Asian markets although now there is a new one in the making.
Audi is working on an all-new A1 which is scheduled to be unveiled in early 2018. One of the early prototypes was recently caught on camera, undergoing cold weather tests in Scandinavia.
The new A1 will be available in five-door Sportback guise only. The three-door model will be phased out and all-electric or even plugin-hybrid variant will not be offered either. Only a mild-hybrid will be available for the new A1.
The new A1 will be based on the lighter and stiffer MQ platform and will be given an adaptive chassis. Unlike the current model, all-wheel drive will be available for variants below the high-performance S1. Drivetrain wise, there will be a new 1-litre 3-cylinder base engine and further up the range, a new 2-litre engine with up to 270bhp of power for a possible full-on RS model.
