Audi is considering including a digital rearview mirror on its R8 e-Tron, the upcoming electric supercar. The technology is currently used in the R18 racecars.
Mainly a marriage of convenience, as the e-tron has no rear window (just like the R18 racecar) the digital setup comprises a tiny but effective rear camera placed strategically at the rear. Inside, the German car maker has used a 7.7 inch AMOLED screen, instead of a conventional LCD, as it more efficient and lighter – in much the same way mobile phones are shifting from LCD screens to AMOLED ones.
The screen, which automatically adjusts to prevent glare from headlamps, can be dimmed or turned off altogether.
