When the luxury car manufacturer, Bentley introduced their first ever SUV, the Bentayga, we knew that the competition in the SUV/crossover segment would be getting hot and heavy – especially since everybody, from customers to automakers to now luxury carmakers, seem to be gravitating towards SUV these days. It all began with the sports car manufacturer, Porsche introducing the Cayenne SUV back in 2002 which saw great success. Maserati didn’t stay put either and introduced the Levante SUV. The latest to join the fray is the Gaydon-based luxury sportscar manufacturer – Aston Martin.
Aston Martin first showcased the DBX Concept at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. Two years down the line, the Aston Martin has now acquired a second factory, after their Wales facility, at St Athan, UK. A former Royal Air Force base, this St Athan plant will roll out the manufacturer’s all-new DBX SUV by the year 2019. The St Athan facility was zeroed inover a year ago, and now the facility will commence production, thus generating 1,000 job opportunities in the process, asserts Aston Martin. The new production plant will also have a facility for electrification line-up, so we could expect the DBX to offer some sort of alternate powertrain along with a conventional one. Two new models under the sub-brand Lagonda, will also roll out from St Athan by the year 2020 and 2021.
The first DBX production prototype is expected to be unveiled by late 2018 before production commences in 2019.
