Ford has launched the new Endeavour for the Indian market today at Rs 23.64 lakh (Ex-showroom Delhi). The big burly SUV, which was first launched in India in 2003, has undergone a major overhaul in terms of aesthetics and mechanicals.
This new Endeavour is based on the 'Everest concept' first showcased in Sydney, Australia in 2013. It was also exhibited at the 2014 Bangkok Motor Show. The production-ready car has carried over the design language from the concept, and the traits are almost similar, apart from the new alloy wheels. The SUV is a proper seven-seater and there is more to the latest version of the Endeavour than just the cosmetic makeover. It is based on a new ladder frame chassis in order to beef up its off-road capabilities.
Upfront, the high bonnet with the Ford's hexagonal grille, wrap around headlamps and a skid plate with integrated fog lamps give the vehicle a butch stance. The three-box cabin is dominated by the flared wheel arches adding to the muscular form of the car. The side profile shows off the new pattern for the alloy wheels. The tailgate features a chrome strip across its length with Endeavour engraved on it along with LED tail lamps.
The interior of the Endeavour is inspired by Ford's F-150 pickup truck. Inside the top-of-the-line variant of the car, there are leather seats and even a leather-stitched dashboard, which looks contemporary and comes with a touch-screen display for infotainment.
The cabin comes in a dual tone, is spacious and features Ford's SYNC2 multimedia system with an eight-inch infotainment touchscreen display like in the F-150. There is a sporty three-spoke steering wheel and an instrument cluster that consists of an analogue speedometer with two TFT screens on either side.
For the Indian market, Ford has offered the Endeavour in two diesel engine options – a 2.2-litre 148bhp unit and a 3.2-litre 197bhp mill. The former powertrain gets a manual option, while the latter is available only with an automatic transmission and permanent all-wheel-drive. The 4X4 trim comes with Hill Descent Control, Hill Launch Assist and an electronically locking rear differential.
The 2016 Endeavour is a successor to the current model on sale in India. It competes with the Toyota Fortuner, Chevrolet Trailblazer and the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.
