The SsangYong Rexton is due to be updated with the arrival of an entirely new model. Codenamed Y400, the fifth-gen Rexton will be sold as the Korean automaker’s range-topping model.
For now, though, SsangYong still has some development work to do, as seen in these spy shots of a heavily camouflaged prototype. According to our sources, Ssangyong has high hopes from this gentle giant, mainly because it covers a segment of the market the Tivoli and Korando can’t hold a candle to. But just like the other two models, the Rexton’s biggest plus point will come in the form of value for money.
The spy pictures reveal that the Rexton is larger than its predecessor at least in terms of length and wheelbase. Along with the redesigned exterior, the Rexton will receive better-quality interiors and new technology.
Aimed squarely at the likes of the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento, the Rexton will debut technological goodies that include autonomous braking, lane departure warning, and a 360-degree camera system. As for the matter of propulsion, a 2.2-litre turbo diesel packing 178bhp and 400Nm of torque will be made available alongside a 2-litre four-cylinder petrol motor.
SsangYong is expected to take the covers off the fifth-generation Rexton later this year.
