Mercedes-Benz has unleashed their SUV offensive for 2018 with their longest running series of SUV, the G-Wagon. Invented in 1979, the Gelandewagen, as it is popularly known, has been Mercedes’ flagbearer in the universe of capable utility machines. Over the years, the G-Wagen has evolved into an ultra-luxurious off-roader with even six wheels in some cases.
The current 463 generation of the G-Wagon is only the third in the last four decades and the all-new fourth-gen G-Class is all set to debut at Detroit on 15 January. Mercedes has already given us a sneak peek into the new G’s interior and we can certainly say that the utilitarian G-Wagon has gone further down the luxury alley.
With its quilted leather and soft touch plastics, it certainly will be a treat to be in one. Also, if the teaser video is to be believed, Mercedes has preserved the G-Wagon’s DNA in the all-new generation car. That is because this is entirely a new platform which might also make sure that if it is going to be the same for the next two decades, it will be electric-ready.
While the petrol V6 might be standard, you can expect the turbocharged V8s to power the AMGs – the only ones that will make it to India if the current trend continues. We hope Mercedes brings the G500 or the G350CDI to compete against the likes of the Range Rover Sport.
