- Petrol M3 to follow the electric version
BMW's M division is in Sweden for some special winter testing. These are the first spy photos of the long-awaited electric M3, a model already confirmed by the Munich-based brand and is due to arrive in 2027. While BMW has previously previewed the future M3, showcasing this zero-emissions sports sedan in the same camouflage, these first images of the car out in the wild allow us to look at some details that were not visible before.
The new M3 is equipped with wider wheel arches, although the ones seen here are not the final ones yet. The brakes, however, feature two huge discs that occupy the full diameter of the alloy wheels and are drilled on both axles to dissipate heat more quickly. The flush door handles are not like the ‘boxy’ ones that have become the norm on the latest batch of BMW models, featuring a novel break in the battery charging port cover, which is still on the right rear side. However, there is one detail that catches the eye, the elbow of the rear doors, which has nothing to do with the ‘Hofmeister’ kink that is still hidden in the rear pillar.
The interior of this high-flying sports sedan has already been seen, including a new-generation head-up display at the base of the windscreen. As for the powertrain, the four motors, one per wheel, not only provide propulsion but also ensure traction, offering all-wheel or rear-wheel drive depending on the situation. BMW has confirmed that a petrol-powered M3 will also be available, however, it will be nowhere near to matching the speed of this one, which will deliver a maximum output of 600 to 650bhp.
We will have to wait until the end of 2026 to see the new M3 under the big lights and until the initial months of 2027 to reach the dealerships.
