- Based on the new Phantom VIII platform
- Will get new driver aids as well as additional features
The Ghost could be considered as a driver’s cars in the Rolls Royce line-up. So it doesn’t come as a surprise when the carmaker took the prototype of the new-gen Ghost to the gruesome Nurburgring. The second-gen Ghost, seen here careening hard on the ‘Ring, looks just like the old one under the heavy camouflage.
However, according to reports, the new-gen Ghost will move to the same underpinnings as the Phantom VIII. This in-house developed platform is similar to 7 Series’ CLAR architecture and thus should be lighter and more dynamic than the older car’s platform which is now almost a decade old. Owing to the bigger platform, the new Ghost might even grow in size although the overall shape remains more or less unchanged.
Under the camo, we could see a sleeker pair of headlamps are hard to miss and so are the characteristic Rolls Royce grille. Thankfully the fascia isn’t squared off to match the Phantom’s styling. The silhouette and the rear also remain more or less unchanged over the current model. On the inside, we could expect new hardware apart from stately features synonym with the brand.
Under the long hood, Rolls-Royce will likely to continue the use of its trademark twin-turbocharged V12 engine in the new-gen Ghost. The 6.75-litre unit could also see some form of electrification like a 48Volt mild-hybrid unit. Moreover, there are rumours of an all-electric Ghost but that will happen eventually.
Rolls Royce will continue to make the new-gen Ghost at their headquarters in Goodwood, Sussex in the UK. A global reveal is expected to happen sometime next year before the baby Rolls goes on sale in late-2020. As with the current-gen Ghost, the new generation model will also come to our shores.
