- Could be testing the new 2.0-litre diesel engine which will replace the 2.2-litre unit
- Expected to debut next year
Mahindra is busy updating its portfolio with the new-gen Thar and Scorpio in the pipeline apart from the new XUV500. But ahead of that, the carmaker was recently spotted testing a BS-VI compliant engine in the current XUV500. Expected to debut next year, the BS-VI motor will be a newly developed 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel which could be replacing the current 2.2-litre mHawk engine.
When it arrives next year, perhaps at the 2020 Auto Expo, the new BS-VI compliant motor is expected to be available in two states of tune. Comparatively, the current 2.2-litre turbodiesel puts out around 154bhp and 360Nm but if rumours are to be believed, then the new motor would have a slightly higher power output than the outgoing engine. After it debuts in the XUV500, the new 2.0-litre motor will surely make its way to other models in Mahindra’s line-up.
Which means the upcoming second-gen Thar and new-gen Scorpio might benefit from this 2.0-litre diesel. Also, the third-gen XUV500, which is also expected to debut next year, will make use of this very engine. There is no word on the BS-VI compliant petrol engine at the moment. More details will be surfaced in the coming months.
