Skoda India has officially launched the latest-generation of the Superb sedan. First unveiled in mid-2015, this new flagship offering from the Czech carmaker has been introduced in the Indian market with a starting price of Rs 22.68 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai). It is available in four variants and with two engine options. This model also sees the introduction of the top-of-the-line L&K variants.
As a flagship offering, the Superb has always had a big, spacious cabin and good driving dynamics to its boot and this new model takes things even further. It is now not only bigger and more luxurious than the outgoing model, but also noticeably lighter and expectedly, more efficient as well. Skoda has based the new Superb on Volkswagen’s highly flexible MQB architecture and as a result, the car is both longer and wider than the old model, at 4861mm and 1864mm respectively. Additionally, the wheelbase has also been improved by 80mm for improved rear comfort.
The new Superb retains the limo-like appearance of the old model albeit with modern design cues taken from the Skoda Vision C concept. The front-end appears a lot more striking thanks to the sharp-edged headlights with illuminated eyelash-like cues, a coupe-like profile, 17-inch alloy wheels and a neat looking pair of taillights.
In terms of equipment, the new Superb is loaded to the brim, with top-spec variants getting three-zone air conditioning, panoramic glass roof, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, ventilated front seats, piano black inserts with ambient lighting, SmartLink connectivity for the touchscreen audio system, puddle lamps, 12-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat with memory function, electric operation for the boot lid and lots more.
Under the hood, Skoda is offering the familiar 2-litre TDI diesel and the 1.8-litre TSI petrol as engine options. While the diesel makes 175bhp of power, the high-revving petrol develops 178bhp. Both these engines are paired to a six-speed DSG automatic gearbox for now while the petrol also gets a six-speed manual.
The new Superb is now on sale in India as Skoda’s flagship offering. It competes with a range of cars from different segments including the Toyota Camry, Audi A3 and the Mercedes-Benz CLA.
