Volkswagen India has recalled 3,23,700 cars to fix the emission related issue. The recall affects Volkswagen, Skoda and Audi India cars fitted with the EA 189 family diesel engines.
The cars fitted with the 1.2-litre, 1.5-litre, 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre diesel engines from the above manufacturers are part of the recall and the companies will get in touch with the respective owners for the fix. Volkswagen first intends to present the technical solution to the Ministry of Heavy Industries and ARAI; once approved VW, Skoda and Audi will carry out the necessary steps to fix the problem in their respective cars.
Around 1,98,000 VWs, 88,700 Skodas and 36,500 Audis are affected by the emissions related recall. A software update will be implemented as a fix and all the related costs will be borne by the brands. VW group will contact the respective owners to initiate the action and assures that none of the above affects the handling, technical safety or roadworthiness of the cars.
Millions of Volkswagen cars around the world have been recalled for the same problem with the total cost to the company now over 18 billion USD (approx. Rs 12,000 crore). Also, the National Green Tribunal has issued a notice to VW over a plea seeking a ban on their operations in India; a hearing regarding the same in planned for December 23
