Maruti Suzuki has officially launched the Baleno in India with prices starting at Rs 4.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for the entry-level Sigma variant, going all the way till Rs 8.11 lakh for the top-spec Alpha diesel trim.
Based on a completely new lightweight platform, the new Baleno is being positioned above the popular Swift. The new Baleno is Maruti Suzuki’s ticket to the premium B+ segment which is filled with cars like the Honda Jazz, Hyundai i20 and the Volkswagen Polo.
Styling wise, the Baleno boasts of Suzuki’s new-age design language seen in the form of the new V-shaped grille and sweptback headlights. The side profile is characterised by a long and low roofline that ends at a rather steeply raked C-pillar. Overall, the car appears to have a flat stance, albeit with muscular wheel arches and a strong baseline.
Inside, the cabin features a refreshing new design compared to Maruti’s existing range of cars. Finished in all-black with silver accents, the interior features climate control, steering mounted audio controls, touch screen infotainment system, multicolour instrument cluster and lots more on top-spec variants. The Baleno is equipped with Apple Carplay that mirrors the phone on the car screen, making it much easier to use. The other highlight is the fact that this is the only car in the segment to get ABS-EBD and front dual airbags as standard across all trims.
The new Baleno is being offered with the familiar 1.2-litre naturally aspirated K-Series petrol engine pumping 83bhp / 115Nm as well as a Fiat-derived 1.3-litre turbo diesel engine producing 75bhp and 200Nm. What’s new here is the CVT gearbox, seen for the first time in a Maruti. The latter is available with the petrol-powered Delta variant.
The Baleno is a completely built in India product with close to 99 per cent localisation. The premium hatchback is available in seven colours – ray blue, fire red, met premium silver, autumn orange, premium urban blue, pearl artic white and granite gray.
