- The 992-gen 911 Turbo is being tested across two continents
- Expected to break cover by end-2019 or early next year
Porsche is busy testing the Turbo guise of the new-gen 911 across two continents simultaneously. A test mule was spotted undergoing rounds at the Nurburgring in Germany, whereas another prototype was spied virtually undisguised on the Stateside.
The 992-gen Turbo and the Turbo S will reportedly be powered by a pumped-up version of the older 3.8-litre twin-turbo flat-six. In the 991 guise, the engine was able to produce around 600 horsepower in standard Turbo while the Turbo S could push out around 640 horsepower. With the retuning and amplification of power from the turbocharged flat-six, could the new-gen 911 Turbo see a magical figure of 700 horsepower? We don’t think so, but we are sure that the new 911 Turbo will continue to get an all-wheel-drive layout along with an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
In terms of appearance, the new Turbo will carry forward the tradition of the older models. Apart from the big air scoops behind the doors on the rear fender, the Turbo models will also have bigger and larger exhaust tips. The standard Turbo could get two oval exhaust tips sticking out in the middle while the Turbo S will sport four trapezoidal tips. There might be an adaptive rear spoiler as a part of the package as well but that isn’t confirmed at the moment. Meanwhile, the cabin will remain more or less unchanged over the standard 992 Carrera except for a host of ‘Turbo’ badging all around.
We expect the new-gen 911 Turbo to break cover in coming few months which means that the upcoming Los Angeles Motor Show could be the probable stage. However, the German carmaker might delay it further into next year when we can also get to see the Turbo Cabriolet models alongside the Turbo Coupe.
