After endless spy shot appearances, speculations, renderings, leaks, and an unending wait later, the new-gen BMW Z4 has been officially revealed at the 2018 Pebble Beach Concours in Monterey. The roadster retains most of its gorgeous looks from last year’s Concept.
Revealed in the M40i First Edition, the G29 Z4 is powered by BMW’s 3.0-litre straight-six pushing out 335bhp of power. A 450Nm of twisting force is sent to the rear electric M Sport differentials. The roadster can sprint to 100kmph from standstill in just 4.6 seconds. The First Edition also comes packed with sports suspension and M Sport braking system.
The third-gen Z4 is built ground-up on a new CLAR platform. Styling wise, the Z4 has the same ‘long bonnet-tight rear’ proportions, however, each and every element is modern. The headlight's LEDs are ‘vertically aligned’ and the new BMW kidney grille gets a mesh design instead of vertical louvres like the traditional styling. The front bumper is busy with a lot of black insets around the air-vents and creases on the bonnet to add to its masculine appearance. There is a large vertical vent on the front fender behind the wheels, while the soft-top replaces the hard folding-top of the previous generation. The sleek taillights dominate the taut rear with a nicely sculpted deck-lip spoiler and contrasting diffuser.
On the inside, the cabin is unmistakably BMW with a no-nonsense, functional layout, rich materials and sporty bits. The driver-focused cockpit gets a new digital instrument cluster and an advanced infotainment system. A more affordable variant with a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine in the 20i guise will be added to the line-up later. A more potent Z4 M is also expected to join the line-up. Further technical details of the two-seater will be revealed next month, says BMW.
After being showcased at the Paris Motor Show, the Z4 will hit the streets in the spring of 2019. Developed alongside the resurrected Toyota Supra, the new Z4 will rival the Porsche Boxster, Jaguar F-Type, Audi TT and Mercedes-Benz SLC. BMW will surely bring the new Z4 in India but we don’t expect it to reach our shores before 2020.
