Volkswagen Motorsport will kick-off the 2018 season of the Ameo Cup this weekend at the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore. The first round of the one-make championship will witness 20 drivers participating, including two women drivers. Of the 20 drivers, seven also participated in the previous season whereas there are 13 new drivers this season.
The participants have already undergone multiple rounds of fitness sessions as part of the fitness camp on 19 June. Following the fitness session, the drivers got into the cars for the first time at the Kari race track ahead of the first round. The race coaches, Rayomand Banajee and Karthik Tharani, took the drivers through several training sessions. These sessions included learning to drive the race car, the racing lines, and braking lessons, thus giving the drivers a fair amount of track time.
In the round one of the Ameo Cup, the drivers will have two free practice sessions on 22 June to get their first laps in the Ameo race car. They will, then, head to the Qualifying on Saturday, 23 June. These sessions will be followed by two races, one each on Saturday i.e., 23 June and Sunday i.e., 24 June. CarWale will be there to bring to you all the actions from the race weekend.
Commenting on the new season of the Ameo Cup, Sirish Vissa, head of Volkswagen Motorsport India, said, “The 2018 season will be yet another exciting season for us. We have a packed grid of 20 participants this year and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing how it all unfolds.”
The 2018 season of the Ameo Cup will have 10 races over four race weekends spanning in the five months. Following the first round at the Kari, the second and third round will be held at the Madras Motor Race Track (MMRT) in July and August respectively. The fourth round will move to India’s F1 track, the Buddh International Circuit (BIC), Greater Noida in October.
