-Second coming for the iconic nameplate
-Design already leaked
-Petrol power only
-Is expected to debut Hyundai’s AMT gearbox and new 1.1-litre three-cylinder engine
The second generation Hyundai Santro (codenamed AH2) will be officially unveiled for the Indian car market tomorrow. It’s a return of the iconic nameplate to the country and will arrive close to the 20th anniversary of Hyundai making its debut in India.
The design of this new Santro has already been leaked and from the images you can see that it will get the family look cascade grille, tallboy silhouette and a design for the rear hatch that’s very similar to the one seen on the Grand i10 and Eon. We’ve got a glimpse of the interiors too and here we can see that the top-of-the-line models will get all four power windows, touchscreen with 7.0-inch display and a beige and black upholstery combo.
The Santro/AH2 is expected to debut a new 1.1-litre three-pot petrol motor as well as an AMT (automated manual transmission). Considering the segment, this engine is likely to produce 67bhp and around 91Nm of torque. A five-speed manual will be offered across the range along with mid-level models getting the AMT. A top-of-the-line AMT is expected to arrive at a later date.
This car is a rival to the likes the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, Maruti Suzuki Celerio and the Tata Tiago in the entry-level B-segment of the Indian car market.
