Back in the 90s, BMW took around eight years to facelift their 3 Series models. Since then that number has come down considerably. Now, BMW’s 2018 codenamed-G20 3 Series sedan has been spotted on test out in snowy conditions.
The 3 Series is one of BMW India’s top selling models and they are now facing updated competition in the form of the latest-generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the forthcoming all-new Audi A4. The customers who bought the F30 or are waiting for the facelifted model, would be disappointed to hear that the German manufacturer is already working on replacing the car.
The seventh generation of the popular 3 Series seems to be in its early development stages; the test-mule is lacking many production parts and is heavily camouflaged. BMW has worked on the current car’s design language with softer lines and a larger double-kidney grille as compared to the current generation. The codenamed G20 3 Series appears to be even larger in size than the F30, which means this will be the largest ever 3 Series yet.
Even though the new 3 Series will get larger, the 3 Series is expected to get lighter. Similar to the new 7 Series which we will see at the Auto Expo and the upcoming 5 Series, the car will adopt the new lightweight Cluster Architecture (CLAR) that uses a combination of carbon-fibre, aluminium and high-strength steel. Powering it could be either 3, 4 or 6-cylinder engines along with a plug-in hybrid variant as well.
