The 2017 BMW 5 Series is going to be launched in India on 29 June. Internally called G30, this seventh generation saloon will rub shoulders against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6 and the Volvo S90.
The new BMW 5 Series is built on the OKL platform, with the chassis being constructed out of a mix of carbon-fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP), magnesium and aluminium. This has helped the new 5 Series shed almost 100kg over the current F10 5 Series, despite it being bigger than the latter. The styling is still characteristic BMW, although the LED lamps and the revised kidney grille give it a fresher look.
The longer wheelbase has improved the cabin space for the occupants’ comfort. The new iDrive system now supports gesture control. It allows you to change the ambient lighting, vehicle setup, audio setup and other settings through the rotary knob, touchscreen or the steering mounted controls. The intelligent remote key fob of the new 5 Series can help you move your car from the outside, in a straight line.
As for the powertrain, we will get this 5 Series in three trims - 520i, 520d and the 530d. We expect it to be priced at about Rs 55 lakh for the entry-level trim while the top-spec car with the 3.0-litre straight six will be priced at about Rs 65 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi.
