Kia, a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor has released teaser sketches of the Niro, a compact hybrid SUV. When launched in the last quarter of 2016, this hybrid will take on the likes of the Toyota Prius and Chevrolet Volt.
Kia officials pressed that the Niro has been designed to fulfil buyers’ requirements of style and practicality from a compact SUV, coupled with the low running costs associated with a hybrid powertrain.
The teaser sketches revealed depict the Niro’s aerodynamic body, wide stance and sleek lines which lends this SUV a sporty look. It is apparent that the long wheelbase will certainly translate into better interior space.
The Niro will be equipped with a 1.6 litre petrol engine mated to a 32kW electric motor and a 1.56kWh lithium-polymer battery along with a six-speed double clutch transmission. Owing to the strength of hybrid vehicle sales, it is quite likely that the Niro will make its debut in the USA.
It will be interesting to see how the Kia Niro fares amidst the established hybrid contenders.
