Ferrari has always been known for its impressive tech-laden cars which run on race tracks across the globe. Achieving a new milestone, the company’s 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 engine which powers the 488 GTB has won the 2016 International Engine of the Year award. Additionally, the engine has also won top honours in the ‘New Engine’, ‘Performance Engine’ and the ‘3.0 to 4.0-litre’ categories.
The award makes it the first engine with over six-cylinders to claim the top spot in a decade. Speaking about it, Dean Slavnich, co-chairman of the International Engine of the Year Awards said, “It was the powertrain’s sophisticated design – loaded with advanced technologies – that saw off a serious challenge from last year’s winner, BMW’s i8 PHEV creation, as well as Porsche’s new straight-six turbo in the 911, to take top honours.”
BMW’s 5.0-litre V10 had won the same award back in 2006. But since then many have opted for downsizing their engines. However, the German automaker BMW still has a reason to cheer, as its 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid motor is pronounced as the best engine in the '1.4 to 1.8-litre' category class. For second consecutive time the Mercedes-AMG 2.0-litre turbo engine which serves the A45 AMG, CLA 45 AMG and the GLA45 AMG has won the award in the '1.8 to 2.0-litre' category.
The 'Green Engine' trophy has been won by Tesla’s full-electric engine which powers the Model S and Model X. The jury of the International Engine of the Year Awards comprised of 63 motoring journalists from 31 countries.
