    2016 Hyundai Elantra variants explained

The D-segment sedan range has been dormant in the Indian market for a while now. Many have preferred to go for SUVs and crossovers in place of the traditional large sedan that the segment is well known for. However, that has not stopped manufacturers from getting these big machines for those who want it and also as a chance to showcase their full capabilities of what they can offer when the budget is large.

Among the chief players in the segment is the Hyundai Elantra which has been a familiar sight in the fray for a while now.  There is a new one now which was launched recently. Always known to be loaded with many features this new car does not disappoint. Priced in the range of Rs 12.99 lakh to Rs 19.19 lakh this car is available across 9 variants (five petrol and four diesels). Here is the breakup of the variants.

Hyundai Elantra SX (O) AT- Rs 17.99 lakh (P) and Rs 19.19 lakh (D)
This is the top-of-the-line version of the sedan and comes with every single bell and whistle that Hyundai offers with its cars. Since Hyundai cars have always been feature loaded let us begin with the cabin. You get leather upholstery, electrically adjustable ventilated driver’s seat, dual zone climate control, 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with android auto and Apple car play, cooled glovebox, cruise control, reverse camera, steering controls and electric IRVM.
On the safety front, you get dual front airbags as well as side and curtain units. A whole load of driving and safety aids have been crammed into the car including ABS with EBD, vehicle stability programme and hill start assist as well as seatbelt pre-tensioners. Externally you get HID lamps, LED DRLs as well as LED tail lamps. This is the only version that gets the diesel automatic option which in this case is a six-speed unit.

    Hyundai Elantra SX (O) – Rs 16.59 lakh (P) and Rs 17.69 lakh (D)
This is the next highest variant of the new Elantra and is priced Rs 1.4 lakh and Rs 1.5 lakh lower than the AT variants. The obvious difference is that these are only available with a manual transmission variant which in this case is a six-speed unit for the both the petrol and diesel models.
Some of the other features that have been removed to reduce the cost include side and curtain airbags, speed sensing door locks, electronic shift lock, sun roof and a drive mode select option which only comes with the AT.

Hyundai Elantra SX- Rs 14.79 lakh (P), Rs 15.89 lakh (P AT), Rs 16.39 lakh (D)
This is the third level variant for the Elantra and includes an automatic petrol option. As compared to the SX (O) you lose out on the electronic safety programmes, projector headlamps and LED DRLs. In the cabin you now get fabric seats, normal driver seat and a manually adjustable IRVM. You also lose on other small features like the smart key, cruise control, smart boot opening and chrome door handles.
The price difference between the petrol models is Rs 2 lakh while diesels have a price difference of Rs 1.4 lakh. The AT petrol slots between the two and has a Rs 1 lakh difference in both directions.

    Hyundai Elantra S variant-Rs Rs 12.99 lakh (P) and Rs 14.79 lakh (D)
This is the entry-level variant and is priced Rs 1.8 lakh and Rs 1.6 lakh lesser than the equivalent petrol and diesel SX variants. This massive drop in price has been achieved by significantly reducing the number of features on offer with the car. Also there is no AT option in this variant.
Externally, you lose out on rear parking sensors, LED tail lamps, electrically foldable mirrors and the chrome radiator grille. In the cabin you lose out on the leather wrap for the steering wheel as well as a gear knob. The climate control has been replaced by a regular AC while the touchscreen system is now a five inch unit that supports MP3 and USB connectivity.
