Although the launch of the next-generation BMW 7 Series is quite some time away, a German source has leaked some vital details on the engine range for the upcoming luxury sedan. Like the current 7 Series, this new model will represent the ultimate luxurious sedan from the Bavarian automaker.
The next-gen model will be offered in both standard and long wheelbase guise. The range’s starting model will be sold in the form of the 730i with a 2-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine developing close to 260hp. The 740i and 740Li, meanwhile, will get a 6-cylinder turbo charged motor developing 330hp.
The eight cylinder range will include the 750i and 750Li models producing around 460hp. Lastly, the range-topping petrol models namely the 760i and 760Li will make use of a 6.6-litre V12 engine. The latter will be tuned for more efficiency and yet, it will be a potent motor with the power output ranging between 580 and 600hp.
As for the all-important diesel range, the report states that BMW will offer the 730d, 740d and 750d versions for the next-gen model. Additionally, there will also be a plug-in hybrid version fitted with a 9-speed automatic gearbox and BMW’s famous xDrive all-wheel-drive system.
The new-gen 7 Series is expected to make use of a heavily revised, lightweight platform. The car could lose as much as 200 kilograms over the existing models, thanks to a lightweight platform which mixes aluminium with carbon fibre and steel.
The new 7 Series will make its debut sometime next year followed by an official launch during the year end. Like the existing 7 Series, this new model will compete with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the Audi A8 in the full size luxury sedan segment.
