The upcoming generation of the Audi A4 has been caught on camera without the swirly black-and-white camouflage, thereby giving us the clearest spy shots yet of the B9 generation model.
The new A4 is expected to make its debut later this year as a 2016 model. It will be followed about a year later by the Avant wagon and All-road variants. Size wise, the new A4 appears to be similar to that of the current model, but it looks like the 2016 model will have a wider rear track and a more coupe-like roofline. These are the first images showing the detailing of the car’s headlights and tail lamps.
The 2016 A4 will be Audi’s second model to ride on the next-generation MLB (modular longitudinal) platform, which will eventually underpin the brand’s future premium models. Thanks to a combination of high-strength steel, aluminium and even some composites to help get rid of excess mass; expect the 2016 A4 to be around 100 kilograms lighter than the current A4.
As expected, front-wheel drive will remain as standard for the 2016 A4 while quattro all-wheel drive will be offered as an option. One of the key upsides of the MLB Evo platform is that it has been designed to be compatible with alternative drivetrains. As a result, the US is expected to get a plug-in hybrid version of the 2016 model, while in other markets Audi will likely offer an all-electric version on the top of the range.
