2016 Porsche Boxster Spyder is a simplistic driver’s car with no frills attached. It omits many necessities of the modern world, concentrating purely on the task at hand – offering motoring pleasures with the top down.
It is a fast car, powered by the same 3.8-litre flat-six engine from the 911 Carrera S and Cayman GT4 that produces 370bhp, and can reach 100kph mark in 4.3 seconds on the way to its top speed of 290kph. This is supposedly the lightest Boxster ever, outdoing the 2010 Spyder that weighed just 1,275kg. In fact, weight reduction has been an obsession, there is no AC or music system; Porsche will not ask for much extra if you want one, but that is not the point of a light weight, performance-oriented roadster.
The soft top though is little easier to operate than before with some electrical assist, one still needs to manually pull it up and down. The Spyder also rides 20mm lower than the standard model and uses brakes from the 911 S, but the most important fact is that it is available only with a manual gearbox.
It looks fantastic with the bodywork sculpted for performance. Also there is no Boxster badging on the car, it simply says ‘Spyder’ announcing to the fellow Boxster owners and rest of the world that this one is special.
The pricing at USD 82,100 (Rs 51 lakh) isn’t exactly lucrative, but this is an exclusive car that will have a limited production run. We would love to see this in India soon. But somehow, manufacturers tend to forget India when it comes to performance cars with manual transmission. Also that would mean we have an outside chance of getting our hands on this one eventually, not that Porsche India has been kind to us till date, but we are hoping against hope.
