The Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan was launched in India at the end of the last year. No doubts the car provides every bit of luxury with typical German styling. However, in terms of performance, well, it was never made with that perspective. Nevertheless, the German Automaker has now unveiled a performance-based car- The S63 AMG Coupe. We hope the carmaker launches this version in India as well.
The new S63 AMG gets a revised fascia and many more changes that help one to distinguish it from the S-Class. The car gets an aggressive front profile that boasts of the AMG-specific grille and a front splitter. With side skirting, the car comes with a rear diffuser and chrome accentuated twin exhaust pipes on the rear bumper. The vehicle stands tall on 20-inch AMG alloy wheels. Even though the car weighs less than 2,000kg, the automaker says it is 65kg lighter than the CL63. Apart from all the luxuries from the standard S-Class, the S63’s cabin gets an AMG steering wheel and sporty seats.
There is a lion under the hood that is just ready to pounce. The twin-turbocharged 5.5-litre V8 engine powering the coupe produces 585bhp of power and 900Nm of torque. This mill is similar to the one the S63 AMG sedan comes equipped with. The power output is anyways 41bhp and 100Nm more than the motor in the CL63 AMG churns out. This motor is mated to an AMG Speedshift MCT seven-speed automatic gearbox. It boasts of a performance-tuned version of the Mercedes 4Matic all-wheel drive system. This drive train enables to split the torque between front and rear wheels in a 33:67 per cent ratio.
The car can do the 0-100kmph run in just 4.3seconds, while the top-speed is electronically limited to 250kmph. Other features of the S63 AMG Coupe are the start-stop engine technology, an ‘Eco’ driving mode and Airmatic adaptive air suspension. Despite the striking performance, the car is capable of returning a fuel efficiency of 11.8kmpl while keeping the CO2 emission levels down to 237g/km.
The Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe will complete the company’s transition from CL-Class to S-Class. The car will go on sale in the UK later this year after its unveiling at the 2014 New York Auto Show, which is scheduled for next month.
