Mercedes-Benz has officially taken the wraps off the GLS-Class SUV at the 2015 LA Auto Show. It is, in essence , a facelift for the vehicle that we know as the current GL-Class and now fits under the German automaker’s new nomenclature which attaches it to the S-Class core model.
External changes for the 2016 GLS-Class are on the lines of a new face which now has a larger grille, power lines on the bonnet, sporty bumper and full LED headlamps. The side profile is pretty much untouched from the current model save for a new design for the alloy wheels. The rear appears to have become a bit slimmer but in essence retains the same design as well as the elements.
Going by the formula of ‘If it ain’t broke don’t touch it’ Mercedes-Benz has only given the cabin updates in the form of new upholstery and a bigger screen for the latest version of its COMAND system.
The American market will get the GLS-Class in the GLS550 guise which is powered by a 4.7-litre twin-turbo V8 that produces 450bhp and is mated to a nine-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The GLS will also be available in an entry-level guise as the GLS450 which is powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6. We in India will get the car by the middle of next year but only with the 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 diesel engine option.
