Volkswagen has taken the wraps off its Sport Coupe GTE concept at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. Now this new creation holds quite a bit of importance for Volkswagen as it previews the brand’s new, progressive design language.
At the front, the new grille, headlights and the VW badge merge to signify the new iteration of the brand’s latest design theme. The stylised air inlets in the front bumper and the low slung bonnet help in delivering a rather sporty stance.
Volkswagen says the Sport Coupe GTE is not a sedan, but a coupe with four doors and a boot lid. Looking at the pictures, the concept puts forward a strong case for itself with its A-pillar that is set far back into the rear, resulting in a very long bonnet, the low-set C-pillar and the striking 21-inch five-spoke wheels.
The GTE Concept is powered by a plug-in hybrid drive system that combines a turbocharged, 3-litre 6-cylinder TSI engine with two electric motors. While the engine produces 299bhp of power and 500Nm of torque, the electric motors deliver roughly 100bhp of additional power. If needed, Volkswagen says the power can be distributed to all four wheels thanks to the rear electric motor and an ‘electric propshaft’.
With the GTE concept, Volkswagen has not only revealed the design of a new model, but also initial glimpses of a new design language that eventually will trickle down to its future mainstream models.
