In what can be described as the rebirth of an icon, the all-new Honda NSX has finally been shown. Interestingly, the highly anticipated sports car has made its debut as the Acura NSX at the ongoing 2015 Detroit Motor Show.
Twenty-five years after the debut of the original, paradigm-shifting NSX, Acura revealed the production version of its highly anticipated successor in Detroit. The production model, in a scintillating red finish, took the stage with a growl from its twin-turbocharged engine.
The new NSX boasts of a high-performance powertrain consisting of a twin-turbocharged engine, hybrid electric-drive technology and an advanced all-wheel drive system. At the heart of the car’s performance capabilities is a new, mid-mounted DOHC V6 engine with twin turbochargers mated to a 9-speed DCT gearbox.
The V6 engine employs a race-inspired compact valve train and dry sump lubrication system to help lower the centre of gravity. The new 9-speed automatic gearbox even allows for rev-matching downshifts. While the rear direct-drive electric motor housed between the engine and gearbox, supports acceleration, braking and transmission shifting performance, the front wheels are driven by high-output electric motors which deliver instantaneous torque response and dynamic torque distribution.
Acura says the NSX has undergone extensive testing at some of the world’s most challenging race circuits, including the famed Nurburgring in Germany. Additionally, the brand has revealed that the first deliveries of the new NSX are expected later this year.
