The X1 might not be the most sought-after BMWs of recent times but its crossover design, sporty dynamics and affordable prices are the reasons why you see so many of them on the road. Good sales, however, doesn’t necessarily mean that it is perfect. The X1, in fact, has seen heavy criticism for being more of a jacked up estate car than a true crossover.
BMW could be on its way to change that perception with the 2015 X1 which has been caught on test at the Nurburgring circuit for the very first time. Dressed in heavy camouflage, the test mule appears to be carrying a larger footprint than the existing X1. BMW is expected to make some drastic changes under the shell with the 2015 model looking to ride on the UKL platform which will eventually form the basis for a number of future front-wheel drive BMWs and Minis.
According to the report, the 2015 X1 could use the same set of engine and drive-train options found on the 2-Series Active Tourer. That means the upcoming model could come powered by engines ranging from a 1.5-litre, 3 cylinder petrol to 2-litre, 4 cylinder diesel unit. Additionally, there could also be a highly efficient plug-in hybrid model eventually joining the fray.
