Renault officially released the first pictures of the 2014 Twingo in a live online event yesterday. The pictures give us the first glimpse of the hatchback ahead of its unveiling at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, next month.Created as a fresh car from ground up, the 2014 Twingo has gone through a major evolution process as the new car will have a rear-engined rear-wheel-drive layout, much like our very own Tata Nano. Also for the first time, the Twingo will be available only in a five-door avatar.
Despite the addition of two doors, the new Twingo has shrunk in size and will share the new platform with the upcoming SmartFour. With a design inspired from the Twin’Run and Twin’Z concepts, the new Twingo sports a trendy front fascia and retro cues all around. The Koleos facelift inspired grille features a prominent Renault logo and circular DRLs in the headlamp assembly. In order to appeal to a larger audience, Renault plans to provide a host of customisable options for door mirrors, side protective moldings and decals.
Interiors haven’t been revealed but Renault says we can expect a "colourful and cheerful cabin which has been ingeniously thought through to deliver user-friendly, everyday versatility." Reports suggest that the Twingo will be offered with a 0.9-litre three-cylinder petrol engine lifted from the Clio. The tiny engine manages to pump out an impressive 90bhp and 135Nm of torque, and with all this power going to the rear wheels, we can be sure that this pocket-sized car will be fun to drive. Owing to the placement of the engine, the dCi diesel unit is expected to be discharged from duty.
Renault plans to position the car higher up in the segment to compete against the likes of the Fiat 500 and Peugeot 108. More details about the interiors and dimensions will emerge when the car will be unveiled on March 4.
