The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class will be launched for the Indian market on January 8. The German automaker’s flagship sedan was unveiled at a function in Germany earlier this year and is currently on sale in most European markets as wellas in America. The car features a new exterior and interior design but retains the same overall proportions and familiar shape.
The Indian market is first expected to get the top-of-the-line S500 variant via the CBU route. It is expected to be available in only two colours and will most likely have a limited run of 125 units. It is powered by a 4.7-litre bi-turbo V8 engine that produces 460bhp and 700Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via the 7G-Tronic plus box.
However, the main model for the German automaker is expected to be the S350CDI which is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel that produces 258bhp and 620Nm of torque. This engine too has been mated to the 7G-Tronic plus gearbox. It is possible that Mercedes-Benz may also bring the S400L hybrid to the Indian market at a later date.
Reports suggest that Mercedes-Benz dealers have already started taking bookings for the new S-Class and are charging Rs 25 lakh as the booking amount for the premium sedan.
